With renowned healthcare systems and top-notch specialized care facilities, the Triad can provide an array of medical care when needed. Here’s a little more about the healthcare facilities in the region.
Alamance Regional Medical Center
This medical center serves approximately 150,000 patients each year and has 1,750 staff members, more than 500 volunteers, and nearly 200 physicians on its medical staff, said Tracey Grayzer, director of public relations for Alamance Regional Medical Center.
“Our centers of excellence include orthopedics, cardiology, cancer, women’s services, and imaging and surgery,” said Grayzer.
“Our women’s care center was recently remodeled,” added Grayzer. “It features family-centered care, a new state of the art Level II/III special care neonatal nursery in partnership with Duke University Medical Center, and all private rooms and beautifully appointed labor and delivery suites with glider rockers and twin size beds for the birthing partner.”
The medical center is planning a 60,000-square-foot Outpatient Center, which will house an ambulatory surgery center, urgent care center, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, as well as physician office space. It’s slated to open in 2008.
Forsyth Medical Center
Forsyth Medical Center, an affiliate of Novant Health, is an 847-bed, not-for-profit, tertiary-care hospital in Winston-Salem. The hospital offers a full continuum of emergency, medical, surgical, rehabilitative, and behavioral health services.
“The Piedmont Triad region is fortunate to have excellent physicians and top-notch medical services to meet the healthcare needs of this vibrant community,” said Jean McDowall, spokesperson for Forsyth Medical Center. “Forsyth Medical Center attracts some of the finest physicians, many of whom are graduates of the nearby medical schools at Wake Forest University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina.”
Forsyth Medical Center and Medical Park hospital perform close to 40,000 surgical procedures each year, including more than 6,500 general surgery procedures and 700 open-heart surgeries. The system is also active in a number of different clinical areas, including cancer diagnoses, stroke treatment, and the delivery of babies.
Forsyth Medical Center boasts several centers for advanced medicine, including the Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, the Forsyth Cardiac and Vascular Center, the Sara Lee Center for Women’s Health, and the Stroke and Neurovascular Center.
High Point Regional Health System
With 400 patient beds, more than 300 physicians have privileges at High Point Regional Health System, according to Diane C. Reaves, media relations coordinator at High Point Regional Health System.
As the cornerstone of the health system, High Point Regional has its foundation in six primary service areas.
“Our Centers of Excellence include the Hayworth Cancer Center, Carolina Regional Heart Center, the Women’s Center, the Emergency Center, Piedmont Joint Replacement Center, and the Neuroscience Center,” said Reaves. “We are a certified Stroke Center and a Trauma Center, we perform mini-gastric bypass surgery, and we have one of the top 10 vascular programs in North Carolina.”
Residents are looking forward to new projects that could come to fruition.
“We are planning a medical office facility in North High Point with Cornerstone Healthcare, and we are in talking stages with Moses Cone about sharing an emergency facility in North High Point,” said Reaves.
Moses Cone Health System
Many residents in the Greensboro and in surrounding areas take advantage of having a variety of health facilities affiliated with Moses Cone Health System right in their backyard.
For instance, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Community Hospital, the Women’s Hospital, and the Behavioral Health Center are located in Greensboro, and Annie Penn Hospital is in Reidsville. The new Moses Cone MedCenter is now open in Kernersville. Plus, an ambulatory care center, including a free-standing emergency department, imaging center, physical therapy, and physician offices, is being built in Western Guilford County (North High Point), said Melissa K. Shearer of corporate planning and development at the health system.
When it comes to additions and renovations, the health system has several projects underway.
The East Tower at Wesley Long Community Hospital has been renovated and is open, and renovations continue on the West Tower, said Shearer.
“When renovations are complete, all patient rooms will be private, updated, and modernized rooms (i.e., no patients will share rooms and beds/equipment will be new and up-to-date),” said Shearer. “The Day Hospital was also renovated as part of this project.
Moses Cone Hospital will also add 18 new acute care beds in the next year or so.”
Northern Hospital of Surry County
Located in Mount Airy, Northern Hospital of Surry County provides a comprehensive array of services to meet the ever-changing needs of its patients. From infant care to geriatric care, the staff of caring medical professionals is well equipped to care for your family.
“Northern Hospital of Surry County is one of several hospitals in the region offering a full host of medical services,” said Bill James, chief executive officer. “We are fortunate to live in a region that has two highly respected tertiary medical centers in addition to our community hospital. So within a one-hour drive, Triad residents can have all the medical services they could ever need. “
According to James, Northern Hospital of Surry County has been consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of medical facilities across the nation for pulmonary and stroke care. “In addition, we also provide high quality imaging services, surgical services, OB/GYN care, and orthopedic care, among other services,” he said. “The people of Surry County and surrounding areas recognize their care-givers as their neighbors here. We have the technology and up-to-date facilities of course, but it’s certainly our highly trained, compassionate people who make Northern Hospital what it is.”
Thomasville Medical Center
Thomasville Medical Center is a 149-bed community hospital located in the heart of Davidson County. “We provide advanced medical and surgical services, critical care, 24-hour emergency services, same-day surgery, maternity services, outpatient diagnostics and rehabilitation,” said Jane Wilder, community relations spokesperson. “Our Centers of Excellence include a nationally certified Stroke Center, a nationally certified Chest Pain Center, a nationally accredited Sleep Disorders Center, a Heartburn Treatment Center, a Blood Conservation Program, a Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit, and a Women’s Center.”
In January 2008, Thomasville Medical Center opened a new emergency department, which tripled the size of its older facility. “This $9 million addition houses 27 treatment rooms, which allows us to treat our patient’s emergencies even faster,” Wilder said. “Our five-bed Chest Pain Center was relocated to the new Emergency Department. We will also have a six-bed minor care area for those emergencies that are less serious.”
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center
With nearly 12,000 employees, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) is home to Brenner Children’s Hospital, the area’s only children’s hospital, and to the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University, one of only 39 cancer centers the country designated as ‘comprehensive’ by the National Cancer Institute—the gold standard for excellence in patient care, research, and education, said Bonnie Davis, media relations manager for WFUBMC.
“The Heart Center offers the most comprehensive program in the region. The Medical Center’s trauma center is the only one in the Triad certified as ‘Level I,’ which means that specialists are on duty around the clock to care for the worst injuries.
“The urology patient care center, which recently relocated to a new state-of-the-art center, is also home to the largest pediatric urology group in the state,” said Davis. “In orthopedics, the Medical Center was the first in the Triad to offer a new type of hip surgery, called the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System, an alternative to standard total hip replacement.”
